日本におけるビリヤードボール研究小史

ビリヤードボールの本格的な研究は、日本では1960年頃に始まった。

1958年、東京三越劇場で開催された第3回テンヨーマジックフェスティバル（天洋大会）において、島田晴夫氏は両手で同時に1つのボールを4つに増加させる演技を行い、大きな評判を取った。島田氏はダブルシェルギミックを使用していた。

この演技に触発されて、ビリヤードボールの新しい技法の研究に情熱を燃やした多くの若いマジシャンがいた。ほぼ同時期にトリプルシェルを用いた演技を完成させた2人のマジシャンを紹介したい。
彼らの名前は湧井恭行氏と濱谷堅蔵氏である。

事例１：湧井恭行氏

1963年に慶應義塾大学を卒業した湧井恭行氏（現在は東京の有名なレストランのオーナー）。
湧井氏は、1958年の第3回テンヨーマジックフェスティバルでの島田晴夫師のビリヤードボールの演技に触発された。
彼は1962年にトリプルシェルを用いて１個のボールを４個に増やす現象を考案し実演した。

事例２：濱谷堅蔵氏

濱谷氏は1959年の第4回テンヨーマジックフェスティバルでの島田晴夫師のビリヤードボールの演技に触発された。
彼は、トリプルシェルを用いて、両手に8個のボールを出現させる技法を考案し、翌年1960年の第5回テンヨーマジックフェスティバルで初めて実演した。当時、彼は14歳（中学3年生）であった。
彼はさらに研究を進め、改良したトリプルシェルギミックを用いて、1961年の第6回テンヨーマジックフェスティバルで実演した。彼が出現させたボールの数は36個であった。

あとがき

2013年に出会った海外のマジシャンの一人に香港のボンド・リー(Bond Lee)氏がいます。
彼は、ビリヤードボールの新しいDVDを2013年の春に発表しました。

私は、2013年9月に八王子に開催されたマジックファンミーティング2013で彼の演技を見るとともに最終日のパーティーで歓談することができました。
彼と出会ったいきさつについてはこの後のコメントで詳しく書きたいと思います。

私がボンド・リー(Bond Lee)氏と出会った経緯について紹介します。
2013年5月5日の夜、クロアチアの友人のBojan Barisic氏から一通のFacebookメッセージが届きました。
内容は、「日本で初めて、トリプルシェルを使ってビリヤードボールを1個から4個に増加させたマジシャンは誰か知っていますか？」というものでした。

Bojan Barisic氏の香港の友人であるボンド・リー(Bond Lee)氏が新しくビリヤードボール のDVDをリリースするのでその日本人の名前をクレジットしたいとのことでした。
私はビリヤードボールの歴史に詳しくないので、知っていそうな奇術研究家3人（氣賀康夫氏、濱谷堅蔵氏、松山光伸氏）にお尋ねしたところ、すぐに回答が得られました。
2日後の5月7日の夜にBojan Barisic氏へ湧井恭行氏と濱谷堅蔵氏の名前を伝えました。

その後、ボンド・リー(Bond Lee)氏は自身のDVDの中で、島田晴夫師とシオミ師とともに、湧井恭行氏と濱谷堅蔵氏の名前をクレジットしてくれました。
他国の歴史を正しく調べようとし、正確な情報を記録した彼の姿勢に私は深く感銘を受けました。

A Brief History of billiard balls research in Japan

Full-scale study of billiard balls began in around 1960 in Japan.

At the 3rd Tenyo festival, which was held in Tokyo Mitsukoshi Theater in 1958, Haruo Shimada took a great reputation in the eight ball act to perform at the same time with both hands the effect of increasing to four from one ball. Mr. Shimada was using the double shell gimmick more than one. Young magician in Japan who witnessed this act astounding was passionate about devising new techniques of billiard balls.

I would like to introduce two magicians who have completed the routine with triple shells at about the same time to you.

The name of them is Mr. Yasuyuki Wakui and Mr. Kenzo Hamatani.

Case study 1 : Mr. Yasuyuki Wakui

I confirmed from Mr. Yasuo Kiga who graduated from Keio University in 1960 that in Keio Magicians’ Society.
Mr. Yasuo Kiga is a well-known magic creator and he has won the Tenkai Ishida award in 1972.

The following is a message from Mr. Kiga.

“The use of triple shells and later moreover the use of sextuple shells was proposed by Mr. Yasuyuki Wakui who graduated from Keio University in 1963.
Today, Mr. Wakui is an owner of a famous restaurant in Tokyo.
He did a wonderful act of billiard ball routine in 1962 and surprised all members of the audience by producing many balls utilizing sextuple shells at the climax.  The same technique was passed on to three other students of Keio Magicians’ Society later and they did the technique pretty well but never reached a stage in which they were able to beat the inventor, Mr. Wakui, in the completeness of the stage.

From around that time, maybe since 1967 there have been no successors of that technique because the use of sextuple shells was technically very difficult and the availability of suitable shells became impossible since that time.

I am not aware of any other magicians who tried to do a show using triple shells or other mutiple shells. To me, the number of shells used seems to be of no importance and the smoothness and beauty of the stage is more essential.

Case study 2 : Mr. Kenzo Hamatani

The following is the information that I heard from Mr. Hamatani.

Mr. Hamatani was inspired by the performance of billiard balls Haruo Shimada’s in 4th Tenyo Festival of 1959. And he started to develop new techniques of billiard balls.
He was 14 years old at the time was to demonstrate the billiard ball production of eight in both hands with triple shells for the first time at the 5th Tenyo festival, which was held in Tokyo Mitsukoshi Theater on July 17, 1960 of the following year.

In addition, in the 6th Tenyo festival, which was held in Tokyo Mitsukoshi Theater on July 23, 1961, he demonstrated the routine with triple shells that evolved further. At this time, he was allowed to appear billiard ball of 36.
