“Sphinx Legacy” 編纂記 第17回

今回は、マジシャンが成功するために持っているべき資質について言及している記事を、異なる号から2例紹介いたします。

The theory and practice of magic is so varied and extensive in its application that no one man can ever hope to cover the entire field. As in medicine, so in magic, specialists are in the forefront and command the greatest salaries. It pays to specialize as has been proved by Downs with coins, Thurston with cards, Stillwell with handkerchiefs, Goldin with illusions. DeLion with billiard balls, Ziska and King with comedy, Olms with watches, Florenzo with cigarettes and other that I do not at this moment recall to memory.
マジックの種類やスタイルには多種多様のものがあるので、1人のマジシャンがすべてをカバーできるものではなく、ある分野において傑出しているマジシャンが成功するものである、ということを述べています。このことに関して、さらにWilsonはつぎの11月号でつぎのように書いています。
Mental magic, manipulative magic, mechanical magic, each has its place and importance in the role of the magician. No one man can fill all the requirements of each. Sylvester and Lafayette each tried to fill the entire bill, and while they were great entertainers, neither was a great magician. As I have stated in previous editorials, specialization is the key to proficiency and success. One may give a great show like Thurston, Goldin or LeRoy, but analysis of these will prove that each performer is a specialist, even though the show is a combination of magical effects.
SylvesterとLafayetteがgreat magicianではないと書かれていますが、文脈からするとそれは、2人がspecialistではない、と言いたいのだと思います。
“great entertainerではあるがgreat magicianではない”という表現は、たいへん興味ある表現です。その表現を逆にすると、”great magicianではあるがgreat entertainerではない”というマジシャンも存在するということになります。ということは、Wilsonは、Thurstonや GoldinやLeRoyは、great magicianであり、great entertainerでもあると指摘していることになります。
そのように指摘していることは同時に、そのようなマジシャンが大成功するマジシャンである、ということも述べているように思われます。
以上2つの文章は、’Editorial’と題される、編集者の言葉として書かれているので、あまり多くのスペースを使わずに書かれています。短い文章の中でもWilsonは、時々重要なことを指摘します。そのような彼のマジックに対する熱心さが、”Sphinx”読者を惹きつけ続けている理由かもしれません。

AMBITION AND SUCCESS
Why do so many young magicians fail? Because they lack ambition to strive and struggle. The degree of success attained by magician is the measure of his ambition. Lack of success evidences lack of ambition.
A very wise man of the East once said: “If you are doing big work you know that it is the work itself that gives you the greatest pleasure and not the money there may be in it; but you also may forget it. I don’t want you to forget the joy of the work nor the money of it, but you must never measure results exclusively by dollars. If the work you are doing is good, the dollars will come to you in such a way that you’ll have to lock the door of the safe if you don’t want them to walk right in.”
Ambition is the password to success. Dust off your ambition, and wake it up. Get behind it and push it out, and success will come.
冒頭の一文だけ翻訳しておきます。
なぜ多くの若いマジシャンが成功しないのでしょうか。それは彼らが志を持たず、それに向かって努力し、それに対して闘うということをしないからです。マジシャンの成功の度合いは、志の高さにかかってくるものであり、成功しなかったということは、志がなかったことを証明するものであります。
‘ambition’は、’志’（こころざし）と訳すのが適切だと思われます。（株）テンヨーの創始者、山田 昭氏はよく「マジシャンには志が必要だ」と言われていました。’志’は’希望’とは違います。ただ’なりたい’、’得たい’と思うのが’希望’ですが、’なるんだ’、’得るんだ’という気持ちが’志’です。
Lance BurtonとMac Kingは親友で、二人はそろって「ラスベガスで成功しよう」と誓い合っていました。そして二人とも大成功をおさめました。そのランス･バートンが有名になりかけたころ、Mr.マリック師はあるコンベンションで、マジックブースで商品を見ている若者の手に、”OUR MAGIC”が持たれているのを目撃したそうです。そのマジシャンこそ、Lance Burtonでありました。
‘志’のある人は勉強します。考えます。そしてクリエイトします。そして出来上がったマジックを身にまとい、観客の前に立ちます。勉強もせず、考えもせず、クリエイトもしないで、成功することはあり得ないのです。
