“Sphinx Legacy”

Harry Thompson

The first performance in Chicago at which an admission was charged was given by a magician. Mention is made of it in “The Theatre, Its Early Day in Chicago,” written by J. M. McVicker, proprietor and manager of McVicker’s Theatre. It was given on February 26. 1834, at the house of Mr. D. Graves and was an exhibition by Mr. Bowers, Fire King, consisting of ventriloquism and legerdemain. In 1847, from May 26 to June 6, at the City Saloon, located corner Lake and Clark streets, the Diorama “Conflagration of Moscow” was given, and W. H. Young appeared in necromancy.

Professor Louis Haselmayer appeared at Farwell Hall on December 5 to 8, 1870. Professor Haselmayer with his trained birds had the honor of appearing on February 16, 1871, at Crosby’s Opera House in the benefit performance given by theatrical performers for the “Little Church Around the Corner.” This was a matinee performance and through it the church received about $2,000.

A heatless Monday drove me from the office to the theater where for twenty minutes I not only warmed my body but also the cockles of my heart. Rosini did it, Carl Rosini. Never did I see such a finished performance as this heatless Monday one. It was Rosini at his best.

First his gloves changed to a boquet and then his cane vanished. In rapid succession followed the disappearance of a red silk from a decanter to be found tied between two blue silks hung on a harp shaped affair of metal. The old twentieth century handkerchief effect to be true, but the added move of the red silk appearing itself between the two enhanced the trick.

Trick three was that of the burned and restored turban neatly performed. Pigeon catching; disappearing pigeons (fashioned after Doc. Nixon’s original), the clock and the Thumb Tie completed the routine. The clock was excellently put over and the Thumb Tie a perfect bit of enjoyable stage humor.

The whole exhibition from beginning to end was one smooth layout of good thought and excellent showmanship. The apparatus was clean and good looking without being gaudy; the two lady assistants were well trained and very nice to look upon; the music was timed and selected in a capital manner and the whole executed with perfect technique even to the few words humorously spoken in broken English. Rosini should be commended on his progressiveness.
